Abu Shakur Balkhi was a significant poet from the Balkh region of Greater Khorasan. He lived during the Samanid dynasty, a period of great cultural and intellectual flourishing in Persian literature. Balkhi was known for his participation in literary discussions and contests, particularly his rivalry with the poet Rudaki. While not as widely known as some of his contemporaries, his work provides insight into the poetic styles and intellectual life of 10th-century Persia. His surviving verses are preserved in various anthologies and literary histories.
