Amadeu Torres

Full professor, poet in the vernacular and in Latin, writer, and linguist. He attended the seminaries of Braga, being ordained as a priest in 1957. He served as an officer of the Archiepiscopal Secretariat, assistant of Humanities and Philology at the Colégio Missionário das Franciscanas Missionárias de Maria, Colégio Teresiano, Colégio do Sagrado Coração de Maria, Colégio de D. Diogo de Sousa, as well as the Seminário Conciliar de Estudos Eclesiásticos and the Externato Liceal Bracara Augusta, of which he was a co-founder. He is the chaplain of the church of Nª. Srª. da Penha de França and currently a canon of the Sé de Braga. He holds a degree in Philosophy from the Universidade Católica Portuguesa and a degree and doctorate in Classical Philology from the Universidade de Lisboa. He passed the competition for associate professor in 1985 and the agregação for full professor in 1988, in the field of Linguistics. He is a full professor at the Universidade Católica Portuguesa (Faculdade de Filosofia de Braga), where for almost thirty years he has been responsible for the courses of Portuguese Syntax and Semantics and History of the Portuguese Language, and a visiting full professor at the Universidade do Minho, where he has taught Portuguese Phonetics and Morphology and History of the Portuguese Language, and chaired, from 1978 to 1995, the course of Portuguese Syntax and Semantics. At both universities, in the master's program, he teaches the course of Textual Criticism and Ecdotics. He attended several supplementary courses, notably, in 1970 and 1972, Pedagogy, Grammar, and Linguistics, and French Language and Literature, respectively, in the summer courses at the Sorbonne and the Institut Catholique de Paris; in 1975 and 1976, Linguistics and Computer, and Linguistics and Computer Science, at the CETEDOC of the University of Louvain; in 1977, Linguistic Statistics, at the University of Strasbourg; in 1986, Linguistics and Grammar, at the University of Lille III; in 1989, Introduction to Micro-Computing, at the Universidade do Minho; and, in 1991/1992, Chinese Language and Culture, at the Universidade do Minho. He is the author of many poems scattered across literary sheets and other publications of the genre, sometimes using the pseudonym Castro Gil, and his intense collaboration with academic and literary works revealing great erudition and culture is noteworthy in journals such as: Revista Portuguesa de Filosofia, Theologica, Humanitas, Euphrosyne, Diacrítica, Biblos, Didaskalia, Arquivos do Centro Cultural Português (Paris), Confluência (Rio de Janeiro), Anais (Academia Portuguesa da História), Revista Portuguesa de Humanidades, Anais (Academia das Ciências de Lisboa), Revista Portuguesa de Educação, Nova Renascença, Itinerarium, Hermes Americanus (USA), Bracara Augusta, Cenáculo, etc.; and in newspapers, including Novidades, O Comércio do Porto, Diário do Minho, Correio do Minho, Notícias de Viana, A Aurora do Lima, A Voz, Época, Diário Ilustrado, etc. Highlights of his literary and research career include the National Prize in heroic poetry at the floral games of the Emissora Nacional in 1948, with the poem O Sonho de Um Castelo; the Prémio Laranjo Coelho from the Academia das Ciências de Lisboa, awarded in 1984 for his doctoral thesis; and the Prémio Calouste Gulbenkian from the Academia Portuguesa da História, awarded in 1996 for his edition of Gramática Filosófica da Língua Portuguesa. He has participated in many conferences at home and abroad and is a member of numerous institutions in Portugal, France, Belgium, the United States, Switzerland, and Italy.
