Ângela Varela

Poet, essayist and teacher. She holds a degree in Romance Philology from the Faculty of Arts of Lisbon. A secondary school teacher, she was a Portuguese lector at the University of Strasbourg. She attended the doctorat de 3ème cycle at the Sorbonne and presented her doctoral thesis on the prose poem to the University of Lisbon. She has published essays and poetry in Colóquio/Letras, Sílex, Nova Renascença, Atlântico, Nordès (Vigo), as well as chronicles in Diário Popular, Diário de Lisboa, Diário de Notícias (from both Lisbon and Funchal). A scholar of the prose poem and of Eça de Queirós (see Eça e «Os Maias», 1990). A set of eleven texts, taken from the unpublished book of poems Corpo da Terra, appears in the collective work Ilha 4 (1993), after having previously appeared with a series of ten poems in Ilha 3 (1992).
