Rivarol was born in Bagnols-sur-Cèze, France. He is best known for his essay "Discours sur l'universalité de la langue française" (Discourse on the Universality of the French Language), for which he won a prize from the Berlin Academy in 1784, highlighting the influence and clarity of the French language. During the French Revolution, Rivarol opposed the Jacobins and emigrated to England in 1791. He later lived in Germany and Russia, continuing to write and criticize the revolutionary regime. His work frequently examined the nature of language, society, and politics, displaying a sharp mind and a witty style. He died in Berlin.
