António Bellini Jara

Poet. With a degree in Medicine from the University of Coimbra, he was a doctor in the Overseas cadre, performing his duties in Mozambique from 1945 to 1953, the year he was transferred to Angola, where he resided in Cabinda and Nova Lisboa (today Huambo) until 1974, after which he began practicing medicine in Lisbon. Co-founder (in 1971) and driving force of the literary group «Vector» from Nova Lisboa. He has literary contributions in the newspapers and magazines: O Planalto do Lobito, Vector (Nova Lisboa), Padrão (Huíla), República (Lisboa), Anais do Instituto de Medicina Tropical, Revista Médica de Angola, O Diário (Lisboa). He is represented in the anthology No Reino de Caliban, vol. 2 (1976), by Manuel Ferreira. For Fernando J. B. Martinho (regarding Álbum, 1980), «essentially, the poet remains faithful to the neo-realist lesson, which, for reasons of political and social circumstantialism, found new impetus after April 25th.» João Rui de Sousa states (regarding Encontros, 1982) the following: «Poetry where the most successful moments are situated in the area of encounters without metaphor of a concise and direct discourse, an area where the motto 'the more urgent/the more direct' is effectively fulfilled, and where the less fortunate moments have to do with involvements in minor forms of metaphorization (based on overly used words, on commonplaces), this poetry proposes itself, almost always as the result of an above all moral vision.» He also published some works in the field of medicine, namely A Saúde no Mundo e os Conhecimentos Médicos, 1972.
