António Graça de Abreu

Graduated in Germanic Philology from the Faculty of Arts of the University of Lisbon in 1976, he was a secondary school English teacher. From 1977 to 1981 he was a professor of Portuguese Language and Culture at the Faculty of Foreign Languages at Peking University and a guest lecturer at the Faculty of Foreign Languages of Shanghai University (1981). During this same period, he was a translator and proofreader at Foreign Languages Press in Beijing and, from 1980 to 1982, a Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation scholar in China, dedicating himself to research in the Archives of Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Macau. Back in Portugal, he taught the course History of Modern China as a guest assistant at the Institute of Oriental Studies of the Universidade Nova de Lisboa (1984/1986) and later (1997/98) the course History of China as a guest assistant at the Higher Institute of Social and Political Sciences in Lisbon. He led open courses on Chinese culture between 1990 and 1998 at the Macau Mission in Lisbon. Equated to a research fellow by the State Secretariat for Culture and the Ministry of Education in 1987/88, he was a fellow again from 1990 to 1992 of the Orient Foundation, conducting research on documentation regarding Macau and China in national archives. He attended the Master's degree in History of Portuguese Expansion and Discoveries at the aforementioned Faculty between 1994-1998 and completed the Archival Research Course at the National Archive of Torre do Tombo (1995). Once again equated to a research fellow by the Ministry of Education from 1996 to 1998 to conclude his master's thesis and two anthologies of classical Chinese poetry. Since 1990 he has been a supervising professor of open courses on Chinese Culture and Civilization at the Macau Mission in Lisbon. He has translated into Portuguese, prefaced, and annotated classical works of Chinese literature. He has published articles in Diário de Notícias, Expresso, Arquivos de Macau, Revista de Cultura (Macau), Estratégia, Boletim Cultural (Mafra), História, Sol XXI, Portugália, Colóquio/Letras, and Oceanos. He has participated in various national and international colloquiums and conferences. He is a founding member of the Luso-Chinese Cultural Exchange Center, a member of the Portuguese PEN Club and of the board of the European Association of Chinese Studies, based in Heidelberg (Germany).
