António José Vieira de Freitas

A philosophy graduate from the University of Salamanca, he was a secondary school teacher, taught at the Academia de Música e Belas-Artes da Madeira, contributed to the press—Colóquio/Letras, Sema, Diário de Notícias (of Lisbon and Funchal), etc.—and served as a member of parliament in the Assembly of the Republic. He organized the first issue of the Cadernos de Poesia e Crítica «Movimento» (1973) and the anthology Da Ilha Que Somos (1977). His poems appear posthumously in the collections Ilha 2 (1979) and Ilha 3 (1991), as well as in O Natal na Voz dos Poetas Madeirenses (1989), Poet'Arte (1990), and Poesia da Ilha (1991).
