Bio
Poet. For forty years he worked professionally at an oil company, which he joined as soon as he finished high school. Later, as a self-employed professional, he became a literary and graphic consultant. In 1951 he founded and directed, with António Ramos Rosa, José Terra, Luís Amaro, and Raúl de Carvalho, the magazine Árvore (folhas de poesia), and has poems scattered across newspapers and magazines and included in the most important poetry anthologies, namely: Alma Minha Gentil: Antologia de Poesia de Amor Portuguesa (1957), Na Mão de Deus (1958), Líricas Portuguesas (1958-1983), Antologia da Novíssima Poesia Portuguesa (1959), Antologia da Poesia Portuguesa 1940-1977 (1979), Colectânea de Versos Portugueses (1964), Poesia Portuguesa do Pós-Guerra 1945-1965 (1965), Contemporary Portuguese Poetry (1966), 800 Anos de Poesia Portuguesa (1973), Antología de la Poesía Portuguesa Contemporánea, by Angel Crespo (2 volumes, 1982), O Trabalho: Antologia Poética (1985), and O Natal na Poesia Portuguesa, by Luís Forjaz Trigueiros (1987). A poet of his time, always present at all key moments of our collective life, he considers himself neither "revolutionary" nor "conservative", focusing instead on enriching the heritage he received. «Não canto para agradar / nem para ser distinguido» states in a poem this poet whom Álvaro Salema considers «one of the most expressive voices of contemporary Portuguese lyricism».
