António Mariano da Cunha Goulart

Lawyer, he was also a poet, musician, and sportsman. He studied in Coimbra, where he is believed to have met the avant-garde artist Francisco Levita. In Figueira da Foz he was part of a futurist-oriented group, along with Luís Joaquim Pinto and António Correia Pinto d'Almeida. With the latter, he wrote Sonetos mínero-metállicos (which they signed under the pseudonym António Doce Amargo), which "brings together nineteen sonnets in which feelings and emotions are expressed through references to metallic materials, compounds, stones, or chemical formulas. Its epigraph is 'To Mr. Júlio Dantas, physician in literature and man of letters in medicine, dainty goldsmith of form and supreme jeweler of rhythm'." [Rita Marnoto, "Futurismo e Futurismos em Portugal" in Estudos Italianos em Portugal, n. 4, 2009, pp. 71-2] He died in an accident on the Mondego River (Vala da Ereira, Montemor-o-Velho) while skippering a boat whose engine was powered by a system of his own design.
