Bio
Novelist, poet, and journalist. He began his career in the literary magazine Trova Popular, 1919-1921, of which he was an editor from the first issue. There he published columns, verses, and fado lyrics (his fondness for the bullfighting arena is also worth noting) and Cartas a Mademoiselle X, the latter under the pseudonym Rui de Salvaterra. He even announced rehearsals for an operetta, A Rosa do Jardim, in partnership with Venceslau de Oliveira, in 1921. An editor for O Século and Diário Popular, he was also linked to sports periodicals, founding the magazines Eco dos Sports and O Ás. To him is owed the creation, in 1934, of the weekly O Diabo, one of our first literary newspapers, which successively had other directors (Ferreira de Castro, Rodrigues Lapa, Braz Burity, Adolfo Barbosa, Guilherme Morgado, and finally Manuel Campos Lima, in 1940); this newspaper marked an era. In República, where he became editor-in-chief in 1945, he published Artur Inez, a bold reply to an article by António Ferro, «A morte do sebastianismo» (Diário de Notícias, 12-4-1933), a reply later published in a pamphlet, Oiça, António Ferro! (preface letter by Ribeiro de Carvalho). There he declared himself a republican and a democrat. He was director of the Sindicato dos Profissionais da Imprensa de Lisboa and of its respective pension fund (Caixa de Previdência).
