Bio
Poet and journalist. Publicist. He completed his secondary education in Lisbon and university studies in Belgium. He went to Mozambique in 1933, where he settled. He collaborated with the daily Notícias, of Lourenço Marques, and was the founder and first editor of the magazine Rádio Moçambique, founded in 1935. From 1936 to 1948, he was its director. He worked as a producer at the broadcasting station that owned that magazine, Rádio Clube de Moçambique, formerly Grémio dos Radiófilos, practically since its foundation in 1933. He collaborated, with poetry, in the first phase of Itinerário, of Lourenço Marques. As a publicist, he was a pioneer of this activity in Mozambique, having founded the first advertising agency in Lourenço Marques that existed in that then Portuguese colony. He debuted as a poet in Lisbon in 1921 with the book of sonnets Horas. The only one of his books that reflects his presence in Africa, albeit only through something he perceives as exotic, is Nyaka, a word that means «humus» in Ronga. He published the collection of novellas O Homem das 7 Horas, 1937, and the books of poems: Horas, 1921; De Longe, 1923; Nyaka: Poemas Bárbaros, 1942; Claridades, 1946; Véu de Fumo, 1951; Rosa Branca, 1954. The latter was organized and published by his wife, Marcelle Campo, due to the serious illness from which the poet was already suffering and from which he would eventually die.
