Bio
Gaius Plinius Secundus (23/24 – 79 AD), known as Pliny the Elder, was a Roman writer, naturalist, and military commander. Born in Como, Italy, he served in the Roman army and later dedicated himself to writing. His most monumental work is 'Natural History', a vast compilation of knowledge about the natural world, covering topics such as astronomy, geography, zoology, botany, and medicine. Although not a work of original research, it is invaluable for the amount of information it preserves from lost sources. Pliny died during the eruption of Mount Vesuvius, while observing the catastrophe and attempting to rescue friends. His dedication to knowledge and its preservation has made him a seminal figure in the history of science.
