Carvalho Barbosa

Playwright, journalist, and poet, he formed a partnership with his fellow countryman Arnaldo Leite that remained active from 1908 onwards and produced, over nearly three decades, a vast number of comedies, operettas, and revues, successfully performed in the theaters of Porto and Lisbon. The most delightful fruit of this collaboration, which began with the comedy A Sombra da Torre, was the farce Cama, Mesa e Roupa Lavada, performed with great success by Chaby Pinheiro in 1922. A brilliant, lighthearted, ironic writer, at times scathing toward social customs, Carvalho Barbosa was one of the leading figures behind humor newspapers of the era. He founded the newspapers Maria Rita, Rococó, and Pirolito, and contributed to or served as editor for the newspapers Voz Pública, Diário do Porto, and A Cidade. He published the poetry books Charneca, Sustenidos e Bemóis (1906) and Ossadas (1909).
