D. Goterres Coutinho

The most important poet of this family and the one who met the most dramatic fate. Linked to the conspiracy of the Duke of Viseu against King D. João II, he revealed it to his brother D. Vasco Coutinho, who reported him to the king. D. Goterres was arrested and executed, and D. Vasco, as a reward, was created Count of Borba. D. Vasco is represented in the Cancioneiro by a dozen compositions on themes of love and despair. D. Goterres preferred satire, both in the nine cantigas included in the Cancioneiro and in his frequent participation in poetic "tournaments". By their father, D. Fernando Coutinho, usually called "the Marshal", there is only a single poetic contribution (in the famous lawsuit against the poet Pêro de Sousa Ribeiro).
