Bio
17th-century poet. Pseudonym of Diogo de Sousa. A contemporary of Jerónimo Baía, Soror Violante do Céu, and Francisco de Vasconcelos, Diogo Camacho was a poet of the Fénix Renascida, yet already aware of the exaggerations of Gongorism, and thus dedicated himself to parodying its practitioners. This is the meaning of the mock-heroic poem Jornada às Cortes do Parnaso (1794), which also criticizes the use of the Castilian language, instead of Portuguese, by these same poets. The poem Vida de Um Estudante Pobre is also attributed to him. Diogo Camacho's poetry garnered the interest of D. Francisco Manuel de Melo in Apólogos Dialogais, as well as, later, positive critical references from Teófilo Braga and Pinheiro Chagas.
