Eduardo Augusto Vidal

Lyrical poet and journalist. He was a midshipman in the Navy and subsequently inspector-general of Customs in Lisbon. He contributed poetry and articles on various topics to several newspapers and literary magazines, such as Correio da Manhã, Diário Popular, O Panorama, and Revista Contemporânea. He took a stand against the proponents of the «new idea» (Naturalists and Realists), in favor of Romantic ideals: «[...] I who have long persisted in believing in flourishing good, / [...] / Who adore Heaven, the flower, pale beauty, / The lilies of Innocence, vast nature, / And who feel in my soul surges of lyricism, / [...]», and from the sonnet «A raposa e as uvas»: «That the time of visions and chimeras / Dissolves in the light of true things, / [...]». He was one of the contributors to História de Portugal Ilustrada (1876-1877) and also wrote the theater plays O Saboiano and Ao Luar.
