Eduardo Teófilo

Short story writer and poet. After completing his secondary education in his hometown, he attended the Faculty of Sciences at the University of Lisbon, but eventually completed a technical engineering course at the Instituto Industrial de Lisboa. In 1954, he went to work in Angola, where he remained until 1975, the year he moved to reside in the Portuguese capital. The setting of his poetry and short stories is much more frequently European than African, although his works with Black and Angolan themes demonstrate sensitivity to that environment and those people, whom he nevertheless always viewed as a European observer. And this sincerity is not one of the least merits, though not the only one, of his work. His book debut is European and relates to his production before settling in Africa: the poetry collection Vida ou Pecado (1955) and the short story book Estrelas na Noite Escura (1958). He is represented in the anthologies Contos d'África (1961) and Imbondeiro Gigante I (1963), by Garibaldino de Andrade and Leonel Cosme, and Contos Portugueses do Ultramar (vol. 2, 1969), by Amândio César. He was one of the authors – with five titles – of the important «Colecção Imbondeiro», published in the fifties and sixties in Sá da Bandeira (now Lubango), Angola.
