Elviro da Rocha Gomes

Poet and essayist. With a degree in Germanic Philology from the University of Coimbra, he taught in Coimbra, at Liceu Camões, in Lisbon, and at high schools in Funchal, Viana do Castelo, and Faro, where he finally settled. He debuted as a poet at fourteen in «Pim-Pam-Pum» (a children's supplement of the newspaper O Século), also collaborating with Tic-Tac (published between 1930 and 1937), O Gaiato: semanário infantil, directed by Alice Ogando, Civilização, directed by Ferreira de Castro and Campos Monteiro, Notícias Ilustrado, and Folha de Vila Verde. Later, he began collaborating with various newspapers and magazines, such as: Labor, Correio do Sul, Algarve, Gazeta do Sul, Aurora do Lima, Vértice, Diário de Lisboa, Diário Ilustrado, Voz da Madeira, República, O Primeiro de Janeiro (the «Artes e Letras» page), and Anais do Município de Faro. He is the author of a Glossário sucinto para melhor compreensão de Aquilino Ribeiro, and translated Um Íntimo Furor, by Kamala Markandala (1958), and some essays from German. He was director of the Círculo Cultural do Algarve, succeeding Joaquim Magalhães (its founder), where he delivered numerous lectures. In 1990, he was awarded the Gold Grade Medal of Merit by the Municipality of Faro, for his services in the areas of education and culture.
