Emmanuel Correia

Art historian and professor. He graduated in Fine Arts from ESBAL (Lisbon School of Fine Arts) and in History from the Classical University of Lisbon, and obtained a master's degree in Art History from the Nova University of Lisbon. He had a curious professional path, starting as a primary school teacher, later moving to secondary and university education. His ease of expression and critical appreciation, along with his aesthetic sensibility, allowed him to dedicate himself to promoting guided tours of Lisbon's main monuments and some cities and towns across the country, namely Coimbra, Batalha, Óbidos, Tomar, Caldas da Rainha, Castelo Branco, Évora, Elvas, Vila Viçosa, Lagos, etc. The services of the Presidency of the Republic frequently request his presence at Belém Palace to accompany groups of distinguished visitors. The Ministry of Culture and the Teatro de São Carlos frequently request him for similar purposes. He has participated in programs about cultural heritage on radio and television, also collaborating with the newspapers Diário de Lisboa, Correio da Manhã, A Cidade de Tomar, Badaladas, Revista da Câmara Municipal de Lisboa, and the weeklies O Algarve and Folha de Domingo, both from Faro, Farol do Sul, from Lagos, Algarzur, and Concelho de Aljezur, now defunct. He belongs to several associations, including the Association of Journalists and Writers of the Algarve and Casa do Algarve, where he coordinated the Teixeira Gomes Art and Culture Center. He organized and led several Art History courses in Lisbon, under the auspices of the National Culture Center, the Friends of Lisbon, the Portuguese Language Society, and banking institutions. In the parish of Odeceixe, he carried out the museological reconstruction of a Typical Winery, and in Aljezur, he established the Municipal Gallery in 1992, for which the municipality awarded him a vote of commendation. Under the patronage of the municipality, he founded and directed, in 1986, the magazine Espaço Cultural, which ceased publication in 1993 and in which dozens of research works were published, some of which were signed by its director. He prefaced some works, notably by the Algarve poets Nídia Horta Antunes, Maria Gertrudes Novais, and Carolina do Vale. As an art critic, he prepared the catalogs for several exhibitions, notably of artists Carlos Porfírio, Soares Branco, Louro Artur, Maria José Cadete, Paula Carreira, Edmundo Cruz, Antonieta Roque Gameiro, Óscar Pinto Lobo, Maria Sidónio, Tozé Morais, etc.
