Evaristo Cândido Monteiro Ramalho

Journalist, poet, novella writer, and art critic, he belonged to the famous Grupo do Leão, which included the most prominent figures of his era. He contributed notable articles to several newspapers and magazines (O Primeiro de Janeiro, Diário de Notícias, O Ocidente, Revista de Portugal, etc.). He published the pamphlet As Ratices da Ratazzi (1880). With his novella Dom Tarouco, he ranks among the regionalist writers, as he captured with detailed descriptions the people, customs, and landscape of his native Douro region.
