Born in Saint-Marcel-d'Ardèche, François-Joachim-Pierre de Bernis rose rapidly in the ecclesiastical and diplomatic hierarchy. He served as ambassador to various European courts, including Madrid, where he played an important role in negotiations between France and Spain. Later, he became a cardinal and archbishop of Albi. His charismatic personality and sharp intellect made him an influential figure in his time. As a poet, Bernis is remembered for his light and gallant verses, which evoke the life of the aristocracy and worldly pleasures, but also for his more reflective poetry on life and religion.
