Gregório Afonso

Servant to the Bishop of Évora, Dom Afonso de Portugal, he is one of the few non-aristocratic poets featured in the Cancioneiro de Resende. He distinguished himself as an author of "arrenegos" (anaphoric litanies with a popular flavour and satirical tone) and has only three compositions in the Cancioneiro (two of them in Castilian), but it is likely that he was a popular (chapbook) writer, like his contemporaries Chiado and Baltasar Dias. Carolina Michaëlis detected traces of Gregório Afonso's influence in the autos and minor works of Gil Vicente.
