Helena Cidade Moura

With a degree in Romance Philology from the Faculty of Arts of the University of Lisbon, she was a prominent anti-fascist activist before 25 April 1974, and was one of the most important Catholic opponents of the Estado Novo. She served as president of the National Culture Centre in 1961. She was one of the most important researchers on the work of Eça de Queiroz, having established the text and notes for its edition by Livros do Brasil and coordinated the Ministry of Education's actions for the author's centenary commemorations. A leader of the Portuguese Democratic Movement - Democratic Electoral Commission (MDP/CDE) after the April Revolution of '74, she served as a deputy to the Assembly of the Republic in the first 3 legislative terms and oversaw more than 400 literacy courses across the country. In 1989, she created, alongside Colonel Vítor Alves, the Association for the Defence and Promotion of Citizen Rights, Civitas. She was the daughter of Professor Hernâni Cidade.
