Hipólito de Meneses Rodrigues

Poet. He completed secondary school in Goa and came to Portugal when he was 19 years old to pursue his studies. After trying other courses, he ultimately graduated in Pharmacy from the University of Porto. He later went to live in Mozambique, settling in Quelimane, where he died at a young age. As a poet, with the limitations inherent to a linguistic background formed in his homeland, constrained between the purism of the written language demanded by the local literary environment and the true Portuguese linguistic practice of the society from which he came and in which he moved, he nevertheless managed, like several other Goans of his generation, to write poems of some quality, albeit late-Romantic and frequently influenced by the Indian roots he could not escape. His sole book, Luz e Trevas, is a collection of poems gathered and published posthumously in Goa, undated, by his brother Alberto de Meneses Rodrigues, who was also a poet and fiction writer.
