Ilídio de Carvalho

Poet. He was destined for an ecclesiastical life from a very early age, as his parents wished. However, after attending the Leiria Seminary, he abandoned the Coimbra one, refusing to be ordained. He returned to his hometown, where he would die many years later, and found employment at the Royal Glass Factory. Ilídio de Carvalho was the brother of the poet José Duarte de Carvalho. His poetic work remained scattered in publications and was only posthumously collected, thirteen years after his death. The author does not show influences of either nascent modernism or the fin-de-siècle schools that so marked the poets of his time. Rather, his work reflects, beyond any school influences, an attachment to the things of his homeland. Indeed, of two theatrical works that remained unpublished, the first was titled Coisas da Minha Terra.
