Isabel Gouveia

Isabel Pereira Mendes, her real name, holds a degree in Law from the University of Coimbra and pursued a career as a land registrar. She contributed to several legal journals, notably Regesta, the official publication of the Associação Portuguesa de Conservadores de Registos, of which she was a founding member. She participated in the reform of the Land Register Code of 1984 and, representing that Association, in several international conferences on Registry Law. In addition to several legal essays within her specialty, namely a Código do Registo Predial Anotado and a Código do Registo Comercial Anotado, she published a work of fiction under her civil name – A Porta Estreita – which won the 1985 José Galeno prize awarded by the Sociedade Portuguesa de Autores, and contributed to anthologies by the Associação Portuguesa de Poetas, Livros Universo, and Edições Orpheu. Her poetry books were published under the pseudonym Isabel Gouveia.
