Born in Dijon, Jacques-Bénigne Bossuet showed an early remarkable talent for oratory and the study of theology. He became bishop of Condom and later of Meaux, and was appointed preceptor to the Dauphin, heir to the French throne, in 1670. In this role, he wrote fundamental works such as 'Discours sur l'histoire universelle' (Discourse on Universal History) and 'Politique tirée de l'Écriture Sainte' (Politics Drawn from the Holy Scriptures), where he articulated the doctrine of the absolute power of monarchs, justified by divine will. His sermons, such as the 'Oraisons funèbres' (Funeral Orations), are considered masterpieces of French literature for their depth and eloquence. Bossuet vigorously defended the Catholic Church and the French monarchy against Protestantism and papal claims, actively participating in theological and political debates. He died in 1704, leaving a legacy as one of the most important thinkers and orators of 17th-century France.
