João de Lebre e Lima

He held a Bachelor's degree in Law, studied Experimental Psychology in Geneva, and attended the Army School. He entered the diplomatic career in 1915, holding, among other positions, that of secretary of the Portuguese Embassy in London and plenipotentiary minister in China (1938-1945). He presided over the Portuguese delegation to the Luso-Belgian meeting in 1935 that dealt with the delimitation of the Zaire River. Upon retirement, he moved to Mexico, where he died. As a poet, in his first work, O Livro do Silêncio, he conveyed an attitude of disillusionment that led him to seek refuge in art. His poetry is traditionalist in form and content. He directed, with Aarão de Lacerda, the magazine Dionysos (Coimbra, 1912 and Porto, 1913). He was a friend of Fernando Pessoa.
