Joaquim de Oliveira

An actor who at various times was part of the cast of the National Theatre, distinguishing himself by the modernity of his acting style, his name is linked to the initiative of the «Teatro Novo», founded by António Ferro in 1925, for which he directed the opening show, consisting of Jules Romains's comedy Knock or the Triumph of Medicine. To this experience he dedicated a volume of «contributions to the technique and history of Portuguese theatre» (O Teatro Novo, 1950). He also published staging studies for works by Gil Vicente and an essay on the playwright João de Castro Osório (Um Poeta Trágico Português, 1959), as well as a controversial volume of columns (Brutos, Saloios, Pulhas, 1955). He left several unpublished plays, including O Homem do Dia, Um Americano em Lisboa, O Grande Salvador, Porto-Lisboa, and the fantasy Aviadores. He was also an antiquarian bookseller in Lisbon.
