Júlio Mário Baptista Ripado

Poet of a single and posthumous book – Os Meus Versos, with a preface by D. João da Câmara, 1908 –, Júlio Baptista Ripado died at age 20 from tuberculosis. Eduardo Schwalbach directed the funeral of the young man who at age 16 had debuted with a sonnet, "Minha mãe", in his "Revista Literária, Científica e Artística", a supplement to O Século (Dec 5, 1904). According to the preface writer, the aforementioned book is composed of "spontaneous, sincere, luminous verses, without a phrase that is a hypocrisy [...] and above all notable for the originality that promised Júlio Ripado a high place among Portuguese poets." Adored by his contemporaries, Carlos Cilia dedicated an obituary article to him in Novidades on April 1, 1907, Alfredo Guimarães honored him in Serões (2nd series, vol. V, Sept. 1907), and Carlos Parreira, also a companion of the poet, evoked him on Rádio Nacional (Sept. 24, 1944).
