Luís António Gonçalves de Freitas

He was a member of parliament, district administrator, secretary of the Civil Government of Lisbon, and left a vast body of work in prose and verse, which he gathered in 17 vols., published in the final years of the 19th century. A poet of romantic inspiration, after a collection of adolescent verse (Fantasias, 1871), he successively published Impressões (1878), Oscilações and Madalena, «biblical picture» (1880), Reminiscências and Horas de Paz (1897). More scarce, his theatrical production comprises the operetta A Pupila de Beltrão (1880), the 1-act verse comedy A Noite de Núpcias (1886), the 5-act drama O Clube dos Perigosos, and the lever-de-rideau À Beira do Abismo, as well as translations of the drama Raquel by H. Lucas and the comedy Sob as Cinzas by Ch. Mérouvel. The remaining volumes of his complete works include speeches and parliamentary work, political articles, Discussões e Controvérsias, and a «miscellany of subjects».
