Luís Pignatelli

Pseudonym of Luís de Andrade. Poet. He studied in Espinho and Coimbra, wandered extensively through various parts of the country, Europe and Africa, lived in Lisbon for many years, aligned with the surrealist current through a deliberate personal attitude. He published a single book during his lifetime, and a large part of his poems remained scattered across newspapers and literary magazines, but all his poetry denotes that clear tendency towards an uninhibited and free spirit, evidencing a vocation that can be said to be almost 'neo-romantic', as can be seen in some of his poems that have been sung in the voices of José Afonso, Vitorino or Janita Salomé. His enthusiasm for poetry led him committedly throughout his life to the dissemination of great poets of his preference and personal taste, such as Vicente Aleixandre, Pablo Neruda, Octavio Paz, Luiz Cernuda, Giuseppe Ungaretti, Ezra Pound and others, who circulate in Portuguese in various poetry anthologies. Alongside his affirmation as a poet, Luís Pignatelli dedicated himself in his later years to gastronomy criticism and chronicles in newspapers and magazines, whose texts, sometimes signed as Athayde de Andrade, due to their savory writing and markedly cultural sense, deserve to be collected in a volume.
