Mário Macedo Barbosa

Poet. He completed his primary studies on his Island and secondary studies at a private college in Lisbon. Returning to Cape Verde, he initially worked as a primary school teacher, then joined the customs staff, a profession he exercised successively on the islands of Santiago, São Vicente, Brava, and Sal. He came to Lisbon, ill, shortly before his death. Writing mainly in Creole, although sometimes his poems are accompanied by a Portuguese version, he was one of the collaborators of the magazine Claridade, from São Vicente (1949), and his poems were also published in the magazine for the dissemination of Cape Verdean culture, Morabeza, from Rio de Janeiro (1973-1974), in one case preceded by an essay about the author, signed by Artur Regina Vieira. He left an unpublished book of poems, in Creole, titled [Ao alto da Ilha do Fogo].
