Bio
Born in Clermont-Ferrand, Chamfort had a life marked by instability and financial difficulties. Despite this, he managed to gain literary recognition for his scathing writings and sharp intellect. His best-known work is 'Maximes et Pensées' (Maxims and Thoughts), a collection of aphorisms offering profound reflections on morality, love, ambition, and the human condition. His observations on Parisian society and the court are insightful and often cruel. Chamfort was known for his independent personality and his disdain for social appearances. He suffered from depression throughout his life and attempted suicide in 1794, being severely injured, and died shortly thereafter.
