Pe. Manuel Monteiro

Jesuit priest, religious writer, and biographer, he served as provincial of his Order, master of Greek and Hebrew, and rector of the Colleges of Angra and S. Patrício in Lisbon. In collaboration with Fr. António dos Reis, he organized the Corpus Ilustrium poetarum lusitanorum qui latine scripserunt (eight volumes, 1745–1748), an anthology of Latin poems that represented, within the broader context of a certain philological humanism, the recognition of a contemporary tendency in literary language toward Latinization.
