Pedro Augusto de Lima

Romantic poet, he lived almost his entire life in Porto, working as a post office employee. A close friend of Guilherme Braga, he wrote the biographical notes accompanying the 2nd edition of that author's translation of Chateaubriand's Atala. He also published the 3-act lyrical drama Eurico o Presbítero de Carteia (1874), inspired by Herculano's work, which formed the basis for the libretto of composer Miguel Ângelo Pereira's opera premiered at the Teatro de S. Carlos in 1870. A contributor to numerous literary newspapers (Harpa, Mosaico, A Grinalda, Museu Ilustrado, A Renascença), he left countless poems scattered across those publications. He died insane at the age of 40. He was the father of Ângelo de Lima, a poet of Orpheu.
