New Year

Ring out the want, the care, the sin

 

Hogmanay, like all festivals, being but a bank from which we can only draw what we put in.

 

Hope smiles on the threshold of the year to come, whispering that it will be happier.

Ring out the old, ring in the new,

 

Ring out old shapes of foul disease, Ring out the narrowing lust of gold; Ring out the thousand wars of old, Ring in the thousand years of peace.

 

Ring out the old, ring in the new, Ring, happy bells, across the snow: The year is going, let him go; Ring out the false, ring in the true.

 

Every man regards his own life as the New Year’s Eve of time.

The times they are a-changin’.

This day Time winds th’ exhausted chain, To run the twelvemonth’s length again.

Now is the accepted time to make your regular annual good resolutions. Next week you can begin paving hell with them as usual.

New Year's is a harmless annual institution, of no particular use to anybody save as a scapegoat for promiscuous drunks, and friendly calls and humbug resolutions.

The first of April is the day we remember what we are the other 364 days of the year.
