Sound Device
Consonance
From Latin consonantia: agreement of sounds. A subtler sound device than alliteration; Emily Dickinson's slant rhymes are largely built on consonance.
Definition
The repetition of consonant sounds within or at the end of nearby words, regardless of vowel sounds.
Example
'Pitter patter' — repeated /t/ and /r/ sounds; 'all mammals named Sam are clammy' — /m/ recurs.
