Pietro Metastasio, whose birth name was Pietro Antonio Domenico Trapassi, was a colossal figure in the history of Italian opera. Born in Rome, his calling for poetry manifested itself from a very young age. At 14, his lyrical skill caught the attention of the jurist and patron Giovanni Vincenzo Gravina, who adopted him and introduced him to Roman intellectual circles. Metastasio became renowned for his opera librettos, which were set to music by many of the most important composers of his time, such as Hasse, Scarlatti, and Mozart. His works, such as "Artaserse", "Cleofide", and "Demofoonte", were characterized by refined poetic language, solid dramatic structures, and a deep exploration of human passions. Metastasio established a model for libretto writing that combined formal elegance with emotional intensity, influencing opera for decades. His career took him to Vienna, where he served as the imperial court poet, consolidating his reputation as the greatest librettist of his time.
