Ramiro Dutra

Essayist, poet, lecturer, and university professor, specializing in nutrition and technology. After completing his high school education in Ponta Delgada, he settled in the USA, where he earned his bachelor's, master's, and doctorate degrees at the University of California. Professor of Biological Chemistry at California State Polytechnic University, which he joined in 1962, he also served as head of the Department of Nutrition and director of the Faculty of Agronomy there. Visiting professor at several universities in Europe and Latin America. He was part of the American team sent to Greece in 1972 to design and implement higher education reform in that country. He headed the California Nutrition Council. Author of an extensive scientific bibliography, he has also dedicated himself to arts and letters, particularly to the theme and, more specifically, to the history of emigration. He has works published in the magazine Arquipélago, from the University of the Azores. He was president of the Council of Portuguese Communities of Southern California. He received several distinctions and decorations, among which are: Outstanding Educators of America, American Men and Women of Science, Gamma Sigma Delta Award of Merit and Borden Prize (USA), Warden Award (Australia) and Comenda de Santiago da Espada, Medalha de Valor e Mérito da Secretaria de Estado da Emigração and Medalha de Mérito das Comunidades Portuguesas no Grau de Ouro (Portugal).
