Salema Vaz

A poet of late Romantic inspiration, he debuted in literature in 1914 with a book of verses, Primeiros Rebentos, followed by others, including Rosas e Beijos, Desgarradas, O Pão do Exílio, Suavidade, Terra de Ninguém: Redondilhas da Grande Guerra, and the children's poem 5ª. Gula. A curious dramatization of Mariana Alcoforado's letters, which he titled Sóror Amor and published in 1929, was translated into Italian by the Lusophile Guido Battelli. Some of his works remained unpublished. He edited the magazine Casino: semanario d'elegâncias, which was published between 1928 and 1929. He completed the Artillery course at the War School. A monarchist and Sidonist, he participated in the Monsanto Revolt (1919), which led to his exile on the island of Madeira. During Salazar's Estado Novo, he was a sub-head of a section at the National Labour Institute. He was a referendary of the Military and Hospitaler Order of Saint Lazarus of Jerusalem in Portugal.
