Salomão de Oliveira

A Portuguese Jew, he held doctorates from several schools, was master of the Amsterdam Synagogue, and president of the Hispano-Portuguese College of the Portuguese Community of Amsterdam, where he emigrated like many other scholars and intellectuals persecuted by the Inquisition. He was a notable philologist and liturgical poet. He published an Aramaic-Portuguese dictionary, Árvore da Vida [...], in which he analyzes the Hebrew roots of words from the Holy Scripture, Hebrew grammars, and a treatise on rhetoric. He also translated Avicenna's canon into Portuguese and the treatise of the mystic Isaiah Hurwitz, Enseña a pecadores [...], into Castilian. A miscellany containing dissertations on moral subjects, philology, and belles-lettres – Ramalhete de Flores Colhido no Jardim das Artes [...] – remains unpublished.
