Salvador Coutinho

Poet and fiction writer. With a degree in Law from the University of Coimbra and a lawyer in Vila Nova de Famalicão, his non-professional life has been divided between sports, political-social participation, and literature. He was a football and roller hockey player and participated in pigeon racing championships. He was president of the Braga District Pigeon Fanciers' Association and of the Congress of the Portuguese Pigeon Fanciers' Federation. Immediately after April 25, 1974, he belonged to the leadership of the MDP/CDE (Portuguese Democratic Movement/Democratic Electoral Commission), joining the lists of candidates for this party to the Constituent Assembly. He was a member of the Municipal and District Secretariats and the National Commission of the Socialist Party and, representing this party, a deputy to the Municipal Assembly of Vila Nova de Famalicão. He began his literary activity in 1957, with the book of poems Eu. He collaborated with the periodicals Estrela do Minho, Estrela da Manhã, Notícias de Famalicão, whose literary supplement he helped launch, and Democracia do Norte. In 1965, he received the Júlio Dinis prize.
