Teotónio Gomes de Carvalho

Poet, holder of a law degree from the University of Coimbra, and member of the Academia Real das Ciências, he held, among other positions, those of secretary and deputy of the Real Junta de Comércio and administrator of the Alfândega do Porto Franco. Teotónio Gomes de Carvalho was, along with António Dinis da Cruz e Silva and Manuel Nicolau Esteves Negrão, one of the founders, in 1756, of the Arcádia Lusitana – a literary association of Neoclassical orientation reacting against 17th-century Baroque style – of which other leading poets of the era, such as Correia Garção and Domingos dos Reis Quita, would also be members. There he adopted the pastoral name Tirse Minteo. Some of his compositions were incorporated into the works of Cruz e Silva, with whom, moreover, he jointly signed and recited several of them.
