Vítor Matos e Sá

Poet, critic, and essayist. His civil name was Victor Raul da Costa Matos, and he also used Vitor Matos. He held a degree in Historical-Philosophical Sciences from the Faculty of Letters of the University of Coimbra, and earned his doctorate in Philosophy in 1963 from the same Faculty, where he taught courses in History of Ancient Philosophy and Axiology and Ethics, with a thesis titled O Acesso à Filosofia Platónica. He collaborated, as a poet and critic, in magazines such as Momento (1950), Távola Redonda (1950-1954), Árvore (1951-1953), and Eros (1951-1958). His first book, published by Edições Árvore, immediately established him as a truly original poet or, in the words of António Ramos Rosa, his contemporary, as «uma das vozes mais altas, mais autênticas e graves da nossa geração». According to Fernando Guimarães, «há em toda a sua poesia um sentido predominantemente reflexivo, que, no entanto, nunca acaba por se dissolver num desenvolvimento ou demasiado abstracto ou demasiado discursivo». He is featured in the Antologia da Novíssima Poesia Portuguesa (1961) by Maria Alberta Menéres and Melo e Castro.
