Louisa May Alcott nació en Germantown, Filadelfia, en 1832. Hija del trascendentalista Amos Bronson Alcott y de la trabajadora social Abigail May, creció en un ambiente intelectualmente estimulante, con amigos como Henry David Thoreau y Ralph Waldo Emerson. Durante la Guerra Civil estadounidense, sirvió como enfermera voluntaria. "Mujercitas" (Little Women), publicado en 1868, se basó en sus experiencias con sus tres hermanas y se convirtió en un éxito inmediato, cimentando su lugar en la literatura estadounidense. También escribió "Little Men" y "Jo's Boys", secuelas de "Mujercitas", además de otras novelas, cuentos y artículos. Alcott fue una firme defensora de los derechos de las mujeres y del movimiento abolicionista. Falleció en Boston en 1888.
