Born in Ansbach, Germany, on October 24, 1796, August Graf von Platen was an influential poet and playwright of the German Romantic era, although his style often aligned more with classicism. He studied law and philology, but soon dedicated his life to literature. He is especially celebrated for his sonnets, which demonstrate formal mastery and a penetrating observation of society and human nature. His satires, often aggressive and controversial, aimed to criticize the politics and customs of his time. Von Platen also wrote dramas, albeit with less success. His work is recognized for its formal beauty, linguistic precision, and an often melancholic and ironic tone. Despite a relatively short life marked by personal and literary conflicts, his poetic legacy is undeniable in German literature. He died in Syracuse, Sicily, in 1835.
