Elisabeth of Wied (born Princess Elisabeth Marie Charlotte Victoire of Wied; December 29, 1843 – March 2, 1916) was the queen consort of Romania as the wife of King Carol I. She was the daughter of Prince Hermann of Wied and Princess Marie of Ortenburg. Elisabeth demonstrated an early talent for poetry and literature, writing under the pseudonym Carmen Sylva. Her work includes short stories, poems, essays, and translations, reflecting her interest in Romanian culture and her desire to promote it. Queen Elisabeth was also involved in charitable works and the founding of cultural institutions in Romania. Her artistic personality and her commitment to her new country made her a beloved and respected figure. She passed away in Bucharest.
