Hope and Optimism

Oh yet we trust that somehow good Will be the final goal of ill.

 

Be near me when my light is low.

 

Ah! when shall all men’s good Be each man’s rule, and universal peace Lie like a shaft of light across the land, And like a lane of beams athwart the sea, Through all the circle of the golden year?

 

There are three lessons I would write, Three words as with a burning pen, In tracings of eternal light Upon the hearts of men.

 

That life is worth living is the most necessary of assumptions, and were it not assumed, the most impossible of conclusions.

This intimate alliance—which for me makes the true man—of pessimism of the intelligence, which penetrates every illusion, and optimism of the will.

[ Quoting a sign held up by a young girl on the campaign trail :] Bring us together again.

What America needs most today is what it once had, but has lost: the lift of a driving dream.

You never know what worse luck your bad luck has saved you from.

If you believed more in life you would fling yourself less to the moment.

If you have abandoned one faith, do not abandon all faith. There is always an alternative to the faith we lose. Or is it the same faith under another name?

Strong hope is a much greater stimulant of life than any single realized joy could be.

There are so many futures still to dawn!

Gratitude pours forth continually, as if the unexpected had just happened—the gratitude of a convalescent—for convalescence was unexpected…. The rejoicing of strength that is returning, of a reawakened faith in a tomorrow and the day after tomorrow, of a sudden sense and anticipation of a future, of impending adventures, of seas that are open again.

Hope in reality is the worst of all evils because it prolongs the torments of man.

You say, it's dark. And in truth, I did place a cloud before your sun. But do you not see how the edges of the cloud are already glowing and turning light.

It’s a funny thing about life. If you refuse to settle for anything less than the best, that’s what it will give you.

Learn from yesterday, live for today, hope for tomorrow.

Don't worry about a thing, 'cause every little thing gonna be all right.

Just can’t live that negative way . . . make way for the positive day!

A pessimist sees the difficulty in every opportunity. An optimist sees the opportunity in every difficulty.

I have become my own version of an optimist. If I can't make it through one door, I'll go through another door - or I'll make a door. Something terrific will come no matter how dark the present.

When you want something, all the universe conspires in helping you to achieve it.
