Allegory

From Greek allegoria: allos (other) + agoreuein (to speak publicly). A dominant mode in medieval and Renaissance literature.

Definition

An extended narrative in which characters, events, and settings represent abstract ideas or moral qualities beyond the literal story.

Example

Spenser's The Faerie Queene: knights personify virtues such as Holiness and Chastity.
